We are so excited you are considering joining band at Hughes Middle School!  
There are lots of classes, electives, and activities to choose from in middle school; so, it may be difficult to decide what you want to do. Read on to find out what band is all about and why being a part of the band at Hughes will get you started on the best time of your life!
  • The National Association of Middle School Principals states that 66% of all college freshman drop out in their first year. In contrast, 96% of band students graduate from higher education.


  • Music students average 66 points higher on their SAT than their peers who are not involved in music.


  • The #1 undergraduate major for students applying to medical school is music… second to Pre Med. 


  • 96% of American astronauts studied the fine arts in school, including Neil Armstrong who played the euphonium!


  • Admission criteria into most major universities recommend participation in an extracurricular activity through senior year of high school.


  • You will get to learn how to play an instrument!

  • You will make lifelong friends!

    • Band is a family. The friends you have in band will stay with you throughout middle school, high school, and beyond!

    • There are also opportunities to distinguish yourself individually in solo contests and auditions.​

  • You take fun trips and participate in lots of activities!

    • Every year the entire Hughes Band goes to Six Flags AND Hurricane Harbor!​

    • 7th and 8th grade band students do even more! (Lock-in, Band on the Run, Mass Band Night, Pep Rallies, etc.)

    • Hight School Band students take LARGER band trips to places like New York, Washington DC, Disney World, and Hawaii!

  • You will get smarter!

    • ​Studies have also shown that kids involved in music make better grades, do better in school, and score better on the STAAR tests! 


The act of learning a musical instrument and participation in a quality group activity is vital to the success of each child. Beginning Band is offered as an opportunity for students to tap into unknown musical talent, to grow intellectually, and to make friends that will share a common bond with them all the way through high school.


As your child moves into middle school, it will be important for them to have a place to belong and a quality group of friends to associate with. The smartest, most talented, and most dedicated students are in the band!
