The Honors Band is made up of mostly 8th graders. This is the most advanced group at Hughes Middle School. By the time students have make it into this ensemble, they have learned most of what they need in order to perform in this band. So, instruction moves away from the basic elements of music to concentrate on the more abstract concepts of musicianship. This is where we put all of the pieces of previously learned knowledge together to make great music. Preparation for a successful experience in the Burleson HS Band Program and beyond begins to be cultivated in this environment. Students are required to participate in all outside rehearsals, clinics, and performances; this includes weekly sectionals/rehearsals either before or after school.
The Symphonic Band is made up of mostly 8th grade and some 7th grade students. This class is for students who have completed Concert Band or Beginning Band and have demonstrated that they are ready for a higher level ensemble. Symphonic Band picks up where Concert Band left off, further exploring new rhythms, styles, and striving to attain the quality of a “varsity” level ensemble. Students in this band are expected to study their music and instrument diligently to prepare for Honors Band or High School Band in their near future. Students are required to participate in all outside rehearsals, clinics, and performances; this includes weekly sectionals/rehearsals either before or after school.
Wind Symphony & Concert Band
The Concert Bands are made up of mostly 7th grade students. This class is for students who have completed Beginner Band or incoming students who have demonstrated that they are ready for this class. This class picks up where Beginner Band left off, further exploring new rhythms, styles and developing the young musician. Having completed at least a year of study, the students are expected to be able to tackle some concepts on their own. Students are required to participate in all outside rehearsals/sectionals, clinics, and performances.
Students in this group are primarily comprised of 6th grade students. Students in beginning band may choose to play flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, or percussion. Beginning Band students are divided into like-instrument classes and focused on learning everything they need to know about reading music, playing their instrument with a characteristic sound, and increasing technical ability. The beginning band generally has two concerts each year with a few outside rehearsals just before each concert. In addition, all beginning band students have an opportunity to compete in the Solo Contest and also in the Beach Within Reach Contest as a part of the Select Beginning Band.
